This question won’t just give you an exact number of years, but it will also lead to discussions about the kinds of transactions the agent has assisted with over their career. It is difficult for a realtor to survive in the business for long periods of time if he or she is not successful, especially when you consider it is a commission-based business.
- How many clients are you typically working with?
This will give you a sense of how much time the realtor will be able to spend with you on your transaction. If they are managing dozens of clients at once, it might be difficult to get the attention you need, especially if you are a first-time buyer unfamiliar with the process.
- Do you work as part of a team?
If the realtor manages lots of clients at once, this isn’t automatically a bad thing so long as there are other team members, including licensed assistants and other realtors, who can step in and help you when your primary realtor is unavailable.
- What are your specialties?
Does the realtor have a preference with regard to working with buyers or sellers? Are there specific areas or locations that the realtor specializes in? The latter question can help if you’re looking for a person with expertise in a specific area, but if you’re casting a broad net, then it’s not necessarily as important.
- What types of communication do you use?
Communication is key when working with a real estate agent, especially early on in the property purchasing process when so much seems to be happening at once. You should have some clear expectations for the types of communication platforms you will use, as well as how often you will communicate with each other, so you can stay comfortable throughout the transaction.
- Do you have any relationships with vendors?
It can be helpful to have a list of recommended vendors for title companies, lenders and contractors already available for you when you start working with a real estate agent so you don’t have to start from scratch with your own research. Experienced agents should have developed relationships with other professionals in the industry throughout their careers, so their ability to provide you with lists of these trustworthy vendors will say a lot about their ability to be a good partner to you during your transaction.
